African Languages

There are somewhere between 2,000 to 3,000 languages spoken in Africa with about 100 languages used for inter-ethnic communication. Add to that the estimated 8,000 dialects and Africa is a continent teeming with languages. However, according to a report by the United Nations Development Program in 2004, just 12 of these languages are spoken by 75% of the population and 15 languages are used by 85% of African populations as a primary or secondary language. African languages belong to the Afroasiatic, Nilo-Saharan, Niger-Congo, Khoe, Austronesian and Indo-European language families.

The primary languages of Africa are: Arabic, Somali, Berber, Amharic, Oromo, Swahili, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.

The detailed information of the distribution of African languages by country can be found in Ethnologue.
